Mucus is a polymer. It is a slippery aqueous secretion produced by, and covering, mucous membranes. It is typically produced from cells found in mucous glands, although it may also originate from mixed glands, which contain both serous and mucous cells.

Respiratory infections like colds, the flu, and sinusitis are common causes of increased mucus production and coughing up mucus. Allergic reactions are another reason that mucus production can increase. Even consumption of spicy foods can spark excess mucus production in the nasal passages.

Foods that help to cleanse the body of mucus.
1.Ginger.Ginger can be used as a natural decongestant and antihistamine. Antiviral and antibacterial properties of ginger can help in easing congestion in the chest by drying out excess mucus and stimulating removal of its buildup. Drinking ginger tea for a few times in a day can help in eliminating excess mucus.
